ABOUT US

Music drives the heart and soul of what we do.

We are a team of music artists, DJs, engineers, managers and industry professionals with a passion for music, which has inspired us to take action. We believe everyone should have access to music education and its benefits.

Department of Sound was launched in 2018 with the mission to empower the youth through music production and podcasting, and simultaneously cultivate Sacramento into a media and entertainment hub. We believe through music we can strengthen our city, build the creative economy and provide multifaceted benefits for members of the community.

Our Work

As we have all transitioned to a new digital learning model in response to COVID-19, we have witnessed that access to music and arts education has become even more difficult. Before distance learning, we provided in-person music and podcast production workshops to our middle and high school students. If someone did not have access to these outlets in-school, we provided these tools through after-school programs in our community.

We have now found a way to continue providing music and podcasting education while students are at home and adapting to a new life way.

FREE PROGRAMS & RESOURCES ONLINE

We want to support our community youth and ensure they can turn to us when seeking artistic outlets and resources. We started with creating our Valley Producer Program, a free online, multi-course program for anyone 13 years of age or older to learn and develop their music and podcast production skills. By providing this free resource online, we have offered students more opportunities to access the creative outlets they need.

With music and podcast production at the forefront, we also initiate conversations and tackle current conversations around equality, mental health, financial well-being, music tech, hardware, and career opportunities within the industry. We have recently hosted Virtual Beat Showcases for students to interact with each other and showcase their work. We are fostering a new kind of connection within our student community. Our Industry Insights webinars have also provided opportunities for our students to learn must-knows from industry leaders.

CURRICULUM FOR EDUCATORS

Department of Sound strives to provide educational institutions and teachers with the necessary tools to deliver engaging and high-quality music and arts experiences. We have expanded our offerings to include a dynamic range of educational content and support for our educators, including a proprietary curriculum, online courses, professional development, technology training, and more. Our program has been tailored for full virtual capabilities and teaches youth music and language arts learning through multidisciplinary methods.

As we continue to grow and adapt to the changing educational landscape, one thing is for certain, we will continue to provide as much access, resources, and tools to our students and teachers alike.
