Many artists explore new genres or combine genres together in their sound. A notable example is Taylor Swift who started as a country sweetheart to a pop star to her recent endeavors with folklore. She has been an extremely successful artist as elements of unpredictability and innovation keep her fan base engaged, as well as evoking increased publicity. By combining genres together too, there is a space for originality. Think about Lil Nas X who blended pop and country together to produce “Old Town Road,” which proved to be extremely popular and a kickstarter for his career.

First, identify the genre conventions of your existing genre. Note the uses of typical instruments, lyrical themes and structure.
Try to explore a genre that is new to you, but not completely foreign. Do some research and listen to new music taking note on individual qualities. Explore even sub-genres as a start.

Experiment and start recording! Remember that trial and error is a healthy part of the process and that the challenge will only push you as an artist in the best possible ways. It is a lot safer to just stick to the same genre and repeat the same conventions, but venturing down a new lane your music will stay fresh and invoke new creative endeavors.
