How To Write a Stellar Music Artist Bio

Your music artist bio should tell a story about who you are, what inspires you, and what you hope to inspire in others. No matter what part of your musical journey you are on, it is equally important to take the time to write an authentic, compelling, and professional biography.

To help you get started, consider following some of these suggestions listed below to have your audience connect with you and your music!

SPECIFICITY IS KEY

Viewers want to know the real you. To increase transparency, include little details about your upbringing and musical background. Here are some prompts to include:

  • Location -  Where are you from?

  • Music Beginnings - Did you and band members meet somewhere? Where did you or your band start sharing your music?

  • Inspirations - Who inspired you to start pursuing music and create your particular sound?

  • Genre and Style - What kind of genre of music do you share? Do you have anything unique to your musical style that you drew from other genres?

KEEP THE STRUCTURE SIMPLE

To keep your viewers from getting visually overwhelmed, it is best to format your bio in a way that is spatially and contextually simplified. Simple ways to do this include:

  • Keep sentences to 1-2 lines in length

  • Enter spaces in between different talking points

  • No more than 2-3 paragraphs total - 200-300 words approximately

STYLE AND EDITING

When writing your bio, it is important to reflect on a tone that accurately represents professionalism and artistry. This is important because you want your audience to get to know you in a legitimate manner. Try implementing these strategies:

  • Remain in an active voice. Ex. “Beyonce pushes boundaries and captivates her audience”

  • Have someone you know that is a strong writer to peer-review the draft

  • Use music terms such as, composed, performed, produced, etc.

  • Be careful not to make it too opinionated. Try to remain neutral and fact-oriented

BE YOUR OWN PUBLICIST

Have you been featured in a local newspaper, article, or fellow artists’ social media or music pages? This can be the place to include hyperlinks to these publications!

  • Update your bio monthly to keep your audience updated on soon-to-come album releases, projects, or news-press

  • Share your social media handles

ADD EVIDENCE TO DEMONSTRATE GROWTH

Readers want to be impressed with your musical success. Providing evidentiary information to validate your growth and progress can hook your audience in. Remember, they want to continue to see you follow a path to greatness, so don’t worry about bragging a little.

  • Have you had the chance to collaborate with any “name-brand” artists?

  • What sort of interviews or media press outlets have you been featured on?

  • Any awards or accomplishments have you achieved on your music streaming platforms?

We hope that these steps help you start thinking about what you could write or improve in your current or future artist bio!
