Types of Reverb

In almost every type of genre of music, the shimmering echoes of reverb are ever present. Experimenting with reverb can be really fun to give off a particular effect in a song. Here we have listed 4 types of reverb effects and their defining characteristics.

1. Room Reverb

The effect is designed to give a pleasing acoustic environment with a pleasing complimentary effect. 

Characteristics:

• Strong initial reflections

• Minimal Body

• 0.1 to 1 seconds

2. Hall Reverb

Hall reverb is another way of saying concert hall reverb. Effective when you want the reverb to fill the space underneath your sound, and preferably suited for a slower tempo. 

Characteristics: 

• Cluster of initial reflections

• Full body

• 1-3 seconds

3. Spring

A man-made reverb that does not emulate a natural sound. Made with springs and has a bouncing effect and often found in guitar amps. 

Characteristics:

• Emphasized higher frequencies

• Resonances filtered through the decay

• Very short

4. Plate

Vibrating with a metal plate that vibrates. Most similar to the hall reverb in the sense that it has a full body, but different in that it has minimal reflections.

Characteristics:

• Minimal initial reflections

• Full body

• Generally medium decays
