Harmony in the Midst of Change: Brandy Bolden & John Hamilton

EPISODE 1 OF 7

Welcome to the first episode of the Sustainable Communities Podcast presented by Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). This podcast is dedicated to exploring the impactful activities and sustainability efforts within the vibrant community of Sacramento. Meet our two exceptional guests: Brandy Bolden, SMUD Chief Customer Officer, and John Hamilton, CEO of the Department of Sound, who play pivotal roles in creating sustainable and healthier communities.

Exploring SMUD’s Visionary Mission with Brandy:

In spearheading SMUD's customer experience, Brandy comes from a unique background expanding across customer service to technology. Her journey led her to SMUD's doorstep, where she found a sense of familial bond and commitment to community service. The energy provider's dynamic environment showed her a unique perspective on how interconnected she was with SMUD's customers – a philosophy that echoed throughout the organization. The focus has always been on enhancing the quality of life of customers and the community, a goal that aligns perfectly with Brandy's personal values.

Addressing Customer Service during Challenging Times:

Brandy highlights the customer-centric approach the company used during the inevitable struggles brought on by COVID-19. The focus was on empathic interaction and understanding the multifaceted challenges confronting the customers. More than an organization, SMUD became a touchpoint of support and collaboration, identifying the core needs of customers beyond just energy provisions.

Creating Positive Change with John:

John shares his journey, expressing how music played an essential role in shaping his mental health. Recognized as a tool rather than a luxury, John together with Tyler Garnett, co-founded the Department of Sound to unlock the healing power of music, a critical resource during an unprecedented period impacting everyone’s mental health, especially youth.

Supporting Future Generations through SMUD's Zero Carbon Plan:

Brandy connects the dots between SMUD's Zero Carbon 2030 Plan and the importance of reaching out to the youth. This plan doesn't just aim to resonate with the older, more environment-conscious generation but also strives to connect with the younger generation through direct outreach and awareness building. As a customer-facing organization, SMUD often adjusts its approach based on customers' feedback and insights, thus always striving to provide what the consumers necessitate, not what the organization presumes.

John also acknowledges the shortfall in the creative economy in Sacramento. While there's an increased discussion around importing culture, music, and art in the city, creators still need a conducive environment to cultivate their talents and thrive.

In Conclusion:

By drawing upon the insights and experiences of Brandy and John, we can envision a future in which the well-being of the community takes precedence. In this future, sustainable technologies, the vibrancy of music, and the preservation of natural and cultural assets are seamlessly integrated to mold a more radiant and sustainable community. The pursuit of a more sustainable and zero-carbon world is not just a vision; it's a dedicated commitment that each of us can contribute to in our distinctive ways.
